Mould-Making
& Slip-Casting
These workshops are run on a private basis, for one or two people sharing
Email Sophie to book - theclayroomuk@gmail.com
No experience of mould-making or slip-casting is required, but a basic understanding of clay, glazing and firing is required.
Beginners to plaster mould-making and casting will be guided step by step through each process.
People who want to refresh their mould-making and casting skills are welcome. The workshops will be tailored to your specific projects, needs and goals.
These workshops can usually happen on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays
Mould-Making
Prior to your workshop Sophie will discuss with you your ideas and goals, as well as suitable objects to make moulds from.
The mould-making day is 6 to 7 hours long
You will be taught the basics of plaster mould-making, how to set up your model, how to wall your mould, and how to correctly mix and pour plaster.
You can make single piece moulds for slab work, drop-out-moulds and multiple piece moulds for casting, depending on your projects.
You will work on your plaster mould throughout the day, with a short lunch break, and finishing times will vary. Your moulds will need to be dried before use - 10 days later or longer
This is a technical workshop focusing on processes, problem solving and technique.
Please find and bring multiple models, as sometimes there is time to make more than one mould depending on complexity.
Slip-Casting
This can be done after the mould-making workshop when your moulds are dry, or using Sophie’s moulds.
You can also do this workshop without doing the mould-making workshop.
The slip-casting day is around 5 hours
You will learn how to prepare and maintain your casting moulds.
We will discuss the best casting slip to use for your projects.
On the day you will use porcelain casting slip and high-fired stains. (You can request to use earthenware casting slip for lower temperature firings)
You will be shown different pouring techniques, how to colour your casting-slip, and different design and finishing techniques. You will also learn how to test colour variations and intensity.
You will learn how to safely remove your pieces from the mould and how to tidy the rims / edges.
This is a creative workshop focusing on design and refinement.
